Stone Chips & Short Cracks

Windshield Chip Repair in Saskatoon, SK

Saskatoon Prestige Windshield handles windshield chip repair in Saskatoon the old-fashioned way: pull the air out of the stone chip, push clear resin in, set it under a UV lamp. Half an hour, usually. Got Auto Pak? Then it usually costs you nothing.

Fill It Before the First Hard Frost

Every chip carries a drop of water or a bit of slush. One cold snap and that water turns to ice, gets bigger and pries the glass apart from the inside. That freeze-thaw cycle works like a crack in a frozen pond: pour warm water on it and the line runs. Saskatoon sees well over 150 days a year below zero, so a chip here rarely stays a chip for long.

Catch it inside a week and roughly 9 out of 10 fill fine, going by what we see at the shop. Leave it until the snow flies and that drops off fast. No word of a lie, the best windshield job we ever do is the one that means you never need a windshield.

Chips We Fill Every Week

Text us a photo with a loonie set beside the chip. Nine times out of ten we can call it from the picture.

  • Bullseye Chips

Round and cone-shaped, like a little crater pressed into the glass. Bullseyes take resin the easiest of any break, and most end up as a faint dot you have to hunt for.

  • Star Breaks

A centre dot with tiny legs coming off it. Every leg needs its own share of resin, so we go slow. Keep the legs under about 5 cm and they fill nicely.

  • Combination Breaks

Part bullseye, part star, and the classic souvenir from a gravel hauler on Highway 11. If the whole mark hides under a loonie, we can usually save it.

  • Short Cracks

One line, shorter than about 15 cm (6 inches), clear of the edge. We drill a stop hole the width of a pin at the tip, then feed resin down the line so it quits growing.

  • First chip: $70
  • Each extra chip, same visit: $25
  • SGI package policy (Auto Pak): usually $0, up to 3 chips a year

How Much Does Windshield Chip Repair Cost in Saskatoon?

Windshield chip repair in Saskatoon costs $70 for the first chip and $25 for each extra chip in the same visit, in 2026. If you carry an SGI package policy like Auto Pak, the repair is usually free, up to three chips a year. A filled chip is about a tenth of the price of a new windshield.

The table assumes the chip is fresh and clean. One full of road grime from a winter of sand and salt can still fill, but the scar shows more.

Honestly, we see the same pattern every spring thaw. The calls pile up the second week of April, and half of them are chips that were small in February. Park the car inside and get it in before the weather turns, and the job stays a $70 job.

Types of Windshield Chip and Crack Repair

Same tools for every break. What changes is the shape, how deep it goes and how much winter grime is packed inside it.

Stone Chip Repair

Bread and butter for us. A pebble flicked up by a sanding truck on Circle Drive leaves a bullseye or a little star, we clean it out, fill it and cure it. Most stone chip repair in Saskatoon wraps up before your coffee goes cold.

Rock Chip Repair on the Highway Side

Grid road and highway chips run deeper and dirtier than city ones. A deep break wants a longer vacuum, so the bridge tool sits on it a while to draw out the air and grit before any resin goes in. The price doesn’t change. The wait does, a little.

In our experience the Highway 16 chips are the deep ones: trucks hauling at speed throw bigger stones. We give those an extra few minutes under vacuum because trapped grit is what leaves a cloudy fill.

Windshield Crack Repair

A crack under about 15 cm, out of the driver’s line of sight and away from the edge, can be filled. We drill a pinhole at the tip so the crack has nowhere to run, then feed resin along the line. Longer cracks come back, so we won’t sell that fix.

Multiple Chips After a Bad Drive

Twenty minutes behind a loaded gravel truck and you can pull in with three or four new marks. All of them get done in the same sitting, $25 apiece after the first, and Auto Pak usually picks up three a year anyway.

Can a Cracked Windshield Be Repaired?

A cracked windshield can be repaired when the crack is shorter than about 15 cm, sits outside the driver’s line of sight and stays at least 5 cm from the edge. Cracks longer than that, edge cracks and stress cracks with no impact point need a new windshield, because the glass has lost strength.

The edge matters more than people think. Laminated glass (two sheets with a clear plastic layer between them) is under the most stress where it bonds to the car body, so a crack that reaches the edge keeps growing no matter what we put in it. If yours is past saving, see windshield replacement or check whether SGI covers it.

We think a straight no beats a fill that fails in a month. If the crack runs into the frit band, the black border printed around the edge of the glass, we’ll tell you it’s a replacement and show you why.

How We Fill a Stone Chip

  • Clean and dry: loose glass gets picked out and the break dried. In winter we warm it gently first so the glass doesn’t get shocked.
  • Vacuum: a bridge tool clamps over the chip with a suction cup and draws the air out of each leg.
  • Resin injection: clear resin goes in under pressure and fills the space the air left.
  • UV cure: a lamp hardens the resin in a few minutes.
  • Polish: we scrape the extra flat and polish the spot so the wipers glide over it.

A good fill brings back most of the strength around the break and stops it from travelling. It won’t vanish, though. Plan on a faint mark, somewhere around 80 to 95 percent clearer than it was.

Keeping a Chip From Spreading Until You Get In

Can’t come in today? A few small habits keep a chip from turning into a crack in the meantime.

  • Stick a square of clear packing tape over it so grit and washer fluid stay out.
  • Warm up gradually. Hot defrost straight onto frozen glass is the quickest way we know to run a crack.
  • Skip the car wash with the high-pressure wand on the windshield.
  • Park inside overnight if you can, especially when it’s going below minus 20.
  • Don’t slam the doors. The pressure jump can run a fresh crack.

Folks out in Warman and Martensville tend to drop in on their way into the city for work. And if a chip turns out to need a whole new windshield on a car with a camera behind the mirror, that camera gets re-aimed before you leave: more on that under ADAS calibration.

Windshield Chip Repair FAQs

How long does windshield chip repair take?

Most windshield chip repair takes about 30 minutes for one chip, and 40 to 60 minutes for two or three in the same visit. The resin cures under a UV lamp in a few minutes, so you can drive away right after, wash the car the same day and use the wipers as normal.

Does SGI cover rock chip repair?

Yes, most SGI package policies like Auto Pak cover rock chip repair with no deductible, up to three chips a year. We check your coverage with your customer number and plate number, file the claim and you usually pay nothing. Plate insurance alone doesn’t cover chips, so the repair is $70.

Can you fix a chip in the winter?

Yes. We fill chips year round inside a heated shop, and winter is actually our busiest chip season. The glass has to warm up slowly first so it doesn’t crack from the temperature change, which adds about 10 minutes when the car comes in from a minus 30 morning.

Will the chip disappear after repair?

Not completely. A filled chip usually ends up 80 to 95 percent clearer, leaving a faint dot or a thin line where the legs were. The point of the repair is strength: the resin bonds the break back together and stops it from spreading across the windshield.

How big a chip can be repaired?

A chip smaller than a loonie and a crack shorter than about 15 cm can usually be repaired, as long as it sits outside the driver’s line of sight and away from the edge. Bigger damage, edge cracks and breaks through both layers of glass need a new windshield.

Is it safe to drive with a chipped windshield?

A small chip is safe to drive on for a few days, but it weakens the glass and can spread with any bump or temperature swing. In Saskatchewan a crack that blocks the driver’s view can also get you a ticket, so it pays to fill the chip within a week.
